If you understand a concept, you should be able to explain it!
Recent research highlights the benefits of oral assessments over conventional written methods in various aspects. Some major ones include:
- Improve material understanding (Qi et al., 2023; Reckinger & Reckinger, 2022)
- Enhance higher-order thinking skills (Yanai & Lercher, 2024; Mahendra, 2023; Theobold, 2021)
- Increase motivation to learn (Connor, 2023; Delson et al., 2022; Utami et al., 2020)
- Enhance verbal communication skills (Gardner & Giordano, 2023; Sabin et al., 2021; Burke-Smalley, 2014)
- Bolster academic integrity (Gardner & Giordano, 2023; Lubarda et al., 2021)
Despite these advantages, the widespread adoption of oral assessments has been limited by logistical and time challenges.
However, with the emergence of Generative AI and Large Language Models, we believe that now is an opportune moment to build a scalable oral assessments platform for higher education and recruiting industry.
